How to Count Words and Characters for SEO Content and Essays

FilesFortress Team · March 24, 2026

Word and character limits show up everywhere — meta descriptions, tweet-length posts, essay requirements, and title tags. Here's why they matter and how to check your text quickly.

Why word count still matters

Many academic and professional writing requirements are defined by word count, not page count, because word count is a more consistent measure across different fonts and formatting. Knowing your count in real time helps you stay within requirements without repeatedly checking a separate document.

Why character count matters for SEO

Search engines truncate title tags and meta descriptions past a certain character length. As a rough guideline:

  • Title tags are typically displayed up to around 60 characters before being cut off in search results.
  • Meta descriptions are typically displayed up to around 155–160 characters.

Writing within these limits helps ensure your full message appears in search results instead of being cut off mid-sentence.

How to check your text

  1. Open the Word Counter tool.
  2. Paste or type your text.
  3. See live counts for words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, lines, and estimated reading time.

If you only need one specific metric, the dedicated Character Counter, Sentence Counter, and Line Counter tools give you a focused view of just that number.

Cleaning up text before you publish

Beyond counting, a few other quick text tasks are common before publishing:

All of these tools process your text directly in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.
